How to Train Counter Staff on Permanent Lighting in One Short Session

By Austen Stucki, Brighter Nights Lighting Technologies · Updated 8 October 2026

Teach four things in one sitting. What the product is in one sentence, the short list of questions contractors ask, how to size a job with the manufacturer’s tools, and when to hand a question to the manufacturer. Your counter staff only need to handle the first two minutes of the conversation with confidence and know where the answers live after that.

Your branch already knows how to bring on a new line. Lighting feels different because it has an app, it has color, and the people at your counter have usually never sold it. That gap closes faster than you would expect. A contractor asking about permanent lighting wants the same things he wants on any other product. Is it in stock, how do I figure out what I need, and who do I call when something goes sideways.

Brighter Nights Lighting Technologies is the manufacturer. BNLT sells only through distribution, so your counter is where a contractor actually meets the product. This guide lays out one short session that gets a counter team ready.

What counter staff need to know, and what they can skip

Keep the session narrow. Counter staff need to explain the product, answer the common questions, open the right tool and make a clean handoff. They can skip design theory, color science and anything about running wire on a roof. The contractor learns the install side in training. Your team sells the box and supports the order.

A good test at the end of the session is simple. Can each person explain the line to a roofer who has never heard of it, without reading from a brochure, in the time it takes to ring up a ticket?

The product in one sentence

Have everyone learn this, in their own words. Permanent lighting is LED lighting that gets mounted on a property once, stays up all year, and is controlled from a phone.

Then add three plain facts about the BNLT line so the sentence has something behind it.

  • It is a family of systems that work together on one property, including roofline track lighting, soffit lighting and landscape lighting.
  • Control is Bluetooth mesh. The system runs without Wi-Fi, and an optional Wi-Fi Gateway adds remote access.
  • BNLT is the manufacturer and does not install. Contractors buy through a stocking distributor, and that is you.

That is enough for an opening. If a team member can say those four things without notes, the first two minutes are covered.

The questions contractors ask at the counter

The same handful of questions come up again and again. Print this table and keep it by the register for the first few weeks.

What the contractor asks What your counter can say
Does it need the homeowner’s Wi-Fi? No. It runs on Bluetooth mesh without Wi-Fi. An optional Wi-Fi Gateway adds remote access for homeowners who want it.
How do I get it? You order it right here. We are a stocking distributor.
How do I know how much to order? Start with the manufacturer’s job estimator. We can open it together right here.
What is the warranty? It is stated per component. Lighting strand and track carry 10 years. Bulbs and controllers carry 3 years. The system has to be registered within 60 days. The warranty page has the full terms.
Is there training? Yes. Contractor training lives in the Masters of Lighting Academy.
Does the manufacturer install or compete with me? No. BNLT does not install. Homeowners who contact BNLT fill out one form and are matched with a certified installer and an estimate.

Two rules go with the table. First, never guess at a spec. If the answer is not on the table or in the printed literature, the right answer is “let me get that for you.” Second, keep product claims per system. A fact about one system in the line does not automatically apply to another, so staff should check the literature for the system the contractor is actually buying.

How to help size a job with the manufacturer’s tools

This is the part of the session worth practicing out loud. Counter staff collect the inputs and open the tool.

The inputs are things a contractor already knows how to measure.

  • Which part of the property is getting lit. Roofline, soffit, landscape beds, a deck or dock, or a screen enclosure.
  • The length of the run or the number of fixtures.
  • Where power is available and roughly how far the lighting sits from it.
  • The finish color the homeowner wants.

With those in hand, open the job estimator and work through it with the contractor. For anything beyond a basic takeoff, the calculators page collects the rest of the tools in one place.

In the session, have each person run one practice job from start to finish. Give them a simple made up house, hand them a phone or the counter terminal, and have them walk a coworker through the estimator as if the coworker were the contractor. One practice run does more than an hour of slides.

When to hand off to the manufacturer

A clean handoff is a skill, and it protects the sale. Teach your team that these go to BNLT.

  • A job that does not fit the tools, such as an unusual structure or a large commercial property.
  • Any technical question the literature does not answer.
  • Warranty questions past the basics. The warranty checker is a good first stop.
  • A homeowner who walks in wanting lights on their own house. Send them to the design form, where they are matched with a certified installer.

The handoff itself is one phone number and one email. Call 407-469-7093 or write to info@brighternights.com. Have staff take the contractor’s name, the job address and the question before they call, so the contractor does not have to explain it twice.

Worth knowing before you plan the session. BNLT provides onboarding training for new distributors, and that training is delivered virtually. BNLT does not staff or work a distributor’s counter on an ongoing basis. That is why a short in house session like this one matters. Once onboarding is done, the day to day conversation belongs to your team.

A simple agenda for the session

Run it before the doors open or at the end of a shift, with product on the counter and a phone in every hand.

Block What happens
See it Light up a sample and let everyone change the color from the app.
Say it Each person gives the one sentence explanation in their own words.
Answer it Go around the room with the contractor question table. One person asks, the next answers.
Size it Each person runs one practice job through the job estimator.
Hand it off Review the handoff list and make sure the phone number is posted at every terminal.

Repeat a shortened version when you hire, and again ahead of your busy season. If you want the bigger picture on carrying the line, start with permanent lighting for building supply distributors. If your team has more questions than this session covers, the distributor FAQ picks up where this leaves off.
