Does Pool Cage Lighting Survive Salt Air?

By Austen Stucki, founder of Brighter Nights Lighting Technologies · 20 years in the trade, 2,000+ installations · Updated 13 September 2026

Most pool cage lighting that fails near the coast does not fail at the LED. It fails at the connector, the adhesive or the fastener. Salt air attacks the joints, not the light. So the questions worth asking an installer are how the connectors are sealed, what the fasteners are made of, and what the manufacturer has actually tested, rather than what number is printed on the box.

If you live within a few miles of the Gulf or the Atlantic you already know what salt does to everything else outside. Here is what it does to lighting, and what actually resists it.

What fails first, in order

  1. Connectors. Every joint between two pieces of wire is a place where salt-laden moisture can get to copper. Once it does, you get green corrosion, resistance climbs, and a section goes dim or dark. This is the single most common failure on coastal installs.
  2. Adhesive. Anything stuck on rather than fastened will let go. Heat cycling on an aluminum cage does most of the work and salt finishes it.
  3. Fasteners. A plated screw in a coastal environment rusts, stains the enclosure frame and eventually loses its grip.
  4. Housing seals. A gasket that has gone brittle in UV lets water sit against the board.
  5. The LED itself. Almost never, and usually only after one of the four above has already let water in.

What IP ratings do and do not tell you

IP ratings describe resistance to solids and water under a defined test. They say nothing about salt, and nothing about ultraviolet light.

Rating What it means What it does not mean
IP65 Protected against water jets from any direction Not rated for immersion
IP67 Survives temporary immersion, roughly a metre for half an hour Nothing about salt, UV or long term exposure
IP68 Continuous immersion to a depth the manufacturer specifies Still nothing about salt or UV

This is why a single IP badge across an entire product line is close to meaningless. Different fixtures do different jobs in different exposures and should be rated individually. Ratings for each Brighter Nights Lighting Technologies system are published on that system’s own page rather than as one number across the range.

The test that actually matters

Accelerated salt spray testing puts hardware in a chamber of salt fog and runs it continuously. It is the closest standardised proxy for coastal life. Brighter Nights fixtures have been through more than 500 hours of it. That is the evidence behind the three year limited warranty rather than a marketing number, and it is the question worth asking of any manufacturer, including us. If the answer is vague, that tells you something.

Ask your installer this one question: “how are the connectors sealed?” If the answer involves twist caps or electrical tape, you are looking at the most common coastal failure point, already built in. Sealed T connectors and a no-splice design exist precisely because of this.

Chlorine, not just salt

People focus on sea air and forget that a screen enclosure sits directly over a chlorinated pool, so the hardware is in warm, humid, chemically active air every single day regardless of how far you are from the coast. An inland pool cage in Orlando is a harsher environment for a connector than the front eave of the same house.

What a good coastal install looks like

  • Mechanically fastened track, not adhesive.
  • Stainless or otherwise corrosion resistant fasteners, matched to the enclosure.
  • Sealed connectors at every joint, and no field splices inside the cage.
  • Low voltage throughout, which is also a code requirement near water.
  • Wire run inside the frame rather than cable tied to the outside of it.
  • The transformer mounted where it is serviceable and out of direct spray.

Every one of those is an installation decision rather than a product decision, which is why the certification programme exists. You can buy good hardware and still get a bad result.

So what should you expect

A properly specified and properly installed system on a coastal pool cage should be a decade-scale item, not a seasonal one. It will want an occasional rinse, the same as everything else on a coastal property. What it should not want is an annual service call to chase a dark section, and if it does, the cause is nearly always one of the five failure points at the top of this page.
