Permanent Lighting vs. Hanging Holiday Lights: the 10-Year Cost Math

By Austen Stucki, founder of Brighter Nights Lighting Technologies · 20 years in the trade, 2,000+ installations · Updated 15 September 2026

Professional holiday light hanging runs $220 to $684 per season, $444 on average, and most homeowners pay that bill every single year. A one-time permanent roofline system installs for $3,000 to $9,000 and carries a 10-year warranty on the track, strands and power components. On raw dollars alone over ten years, hanging is often still cheaper for a small or medium home. What it does not buy you is the other 350 days a year, or the ladder.

This is the comparison most lighting companies will not run for you honestly, because the dollars do not always favour the permanent system. Here is the actual math, and the parts of it that are not about dollars at all.

What hanging costs, every single year

Industry pricing data puts professional Christmas light installation at a national average of $444 per season, with a typical range of $220 to $684 depending on home size and design, according to Angi’s 2026 cost data. That number recurs every year, plus takedown, plus storage, plus whatever broke or faded in the bin since last winter.

Home size Typical seasonal cost 10-year total
Small, single storey About $250 About $2,500
Medium, two storey About $450 About $4,500
Large, three storey About $900 About $9,000

What a permanent system costs, once

A permanent roofline system installs into a track fastened to the roofline itself, with 90-lumen IP67-rated fixtures individually addressable across 16 million colours, running through one app alongside any other zones on the property. Most installations run $3,000 to $9,000 installed, driven mostly by the length and number of corners the roofline has to follow, and it carries a 10-year warranty on the track, strands and power components.

The honest math

Lay those two tables side by side and the picture is not a clean win for either side. A small or medium home hanging lights every December can land under the ten-year cost of a permanent system, in raw dollars. A large, complex roofline tends to cross over into permanent-system territory somewhere around year seven to ten. Anyone who tells you the permanent system always pays for itself in dollars alone is rounding in their own favour.

What the dollars do not capture

This is where the comparison actually gets decided for most homeowners, and it has nothing to do with the ten-year total.

  • One holiday versus every night of the year. A hung string comes down in January. A permanent system runs Halloween, game day, patriotic presets and plain warm white every other night, on the same fixtures.
  • The ladder. Every hang and every takedown is a trip up the roofline. Ten years of that is ten years of that risk, for a homeowner or for whoever they hire.
  • Off by day. Track lighting reads as part of the roofline in daylight rather than a string of hardware, which matters in neighbourhoods with an architectural review board (more on that in getting HOA approval for permanent outdoor lighting).
  • Nothing to store, nothing to replace. No attic bin, no strand that stops working two bulbs in, no morning-after-a-storm inspection.

Who should actually stick with hanging

If three or four weeks of lights in December is genuinely all you want, and the ladder and the storage bin do not bother you, hanging lights are a perfectly reasonable way to spend $250 to $450 a year. The permanent system is for the homeowner who wants the look to change with the calendar and never wants to touch a ladder again to make that happen.

How to get a real number for your home

Roofline pricing is driven by footage and how many corners and peaks the track has to follow, so the only accurate number is one measured against your actual house. Tell us about your property and we match you with a certified installer who gives you a real installed price range.
